In the four corners of the Haut-Saint-Francois, people took the time come together around the various cenotaphs for Remembrance Day commemorative ceremonies, to give homage to the veterans in our region as well as all those who work to make the planet a better world.
Whether in Scotstown, Bury, Saint-Isidore-de-Clifton, Sawyerville, Island Brook, Cookshire, Weedon or East Angus, people gathered together in gratitude to those who defended democracy, and particularly the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice of their life.
In Bury, more than 100 persons gathered at the community centre. Richard Grey, president of the Canadian Legion Branch 48 of Bury, directed the official ceremony which took place with great solemnity. Representatives of the Candian Legion branches of Sawyerville and East Angus, as well as the Air Cadets of the Haut-Saint-François and the Army Navy Air Force of Lennoxville participated in the event.
Several dignitaries spoke during the service, followed by poems, prayers, and other words. The reading of the names of the veterans always constitutes a significant moment of the ceremony. The artist Jonathan MacAuley performed a pièce de circonstance. Mr. Grey acknowledged the presence of two World War II veterans affiliated with the Bury Legion 48, Grant Taylor and Harris Nugent. A number of participants proceeded to deposit wreaths of flowers, including Ghislain Bolduc, the provincial deputy for Megantic, and Philippe Cadieux, representative of Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal deputy for Compton and Minister of International Development and La Francophonie.
